Re:

DNA polymorphism around the location of the gene responsible for melanism (a region they have identified, not yet the exact gene) is extremely limited. I know about the reduction of polymorphism being an indication of recent selection - I've published a bit about this stuff myself - but I think cla...

Re: Evolutionists Show of Shutting Down the Debate

OK. But I don't know what you mean by de-evolution.

Re: Evolutionists Show of Shutting Down the Debate

Before it gets buried too deeply in this thread, has anyone had a look at the Science paper concerning melanism in the peppered moth (near the top of the previous page)? I'm very curious to know the rationale behind the authors' claim of the mutation being recent.

Re: Evolutionists Show of Shutting Down the Debate

Okay, I glanced by your earlier definition of population as your family. Sorry. If the allele in question was unique to only you and your future brother-in-law, who is homozygous for the allele, in your family, and both of his parents are dead (they both had the allele), and he had no siblings, and ...

Complaining? Who's complaining? About what? Families are not generally considered to be populations, but nice try. If your future brother-in-law has the same allele as you have, then it is elsewhere in the population (not referring to your family). He marries your sister and is now part of your fami...

Sure he was, unless he had not yet been born when you got run over. He may not have been part of your family, but he was a part of the population.

Re: Evolutionists Show of Shutting Down the Debate

My sister though, then gets married to a guy who has it and is homozygous. After they have a baby, then the change in frequency is reversed. Back to square one. Ahhh ! No evolution occurred, then...or else we'd have to say that evolution, followed by de-evolution, occurred. That's why I tried to st...

Re: Evolutionists Show of Shutting Down the Debate

If some allele becomes lower in frequency, over time ( generations) , is it not evolution ? If my "kind" got reduced by one, it's a change. If it increases by ten, it's a change. Of course, this is not taking into account that the scenario of allele "frequency change", might be ...

Re: Evolutionists Show of Shutting Down the Debate

Breaking news! Well, it was last spring. I've been talking in general terms about this melanism business without having updated my knowledge about it. (Shame on me.) I've just done so and have come across a publication in the journal Science from last May. The abstract reports: "The rapid sprea...

Re: Evolutionists Show of Shutting Down the Debate

Gavin, If I get fatally run over by a bus, at age 10, did evolution occur ? If getting run over later in life, after having one child ? Two ? After grandchildren ? How would we (theoretically ) determine whether or not evolution occurred ? Your genes, from you, will have no influence on the future ...

Re: Evolutionists Show of Shutting Down the Debate

I would try to phrase it differently. Maybe to indicate the difference between a state where a gene has more than one form, and the various forms themselves. I agree that loci can be referred to as being polymorphic if they contain polymorphisms - ie. the loci possess "many forms". The wo...

Re: Evolutionists Show of Shutting Down the Debate

My apologies, Crucible, for creating this confusion. I've worked with DNA for so long that I forget that many non-geneticists think of mutations as the manifestations of changes in the DNA, which can also be called a polymorphism. Polymorphism, in the context being used here, though, refers to "...
