unhappyness and *dreams* about a better life.. r they a result from evolution?

Our brains evolved, and with that evolution came dreams, which help us embrace better life.

Thanks to dreams men have done wonders (bringing the evolution of society)

About unhappiness I am not certain. Humans try to be successful in order not to feel unhappiness, so maybe it is also a result of evolution

Yes, evolution is the ultimate cause---however, social evolution as well as biological and behavioral evolution. Behaviorally, we evolved as social animals. We need to work and live together to be happy. However, when our society is weak because what we believe is divided, we feel stress and, because of our deteriorating life as a result, we feel resentment. We also feel left out and rootless. Many take their frustration out on their children. Others are unable to have children.

So, we wish for a better life than the one we have even tho this one is stuffed with "things" which our consumer-driven society drives us to buy. We wish for a better life even though we are free to take part in a host of assorted pleasures constantly being advertised or talked about on tv.

People have no "purpose" and feel unimportant, useless.

Perhaps the solution is to build a new and better society. . .

Charles, can humans truely be happy? Or will we never be satisfied? Countless literature have been written about the rewards of pursuit of happiness(Great Gatsby comes to mind) but how many are really happy when they finally get it? The movie the Matrix somewhat deals with this issue saying that humans will never be truely happy even in a utopian universe. We live for the struggle. Unhappiness exists as a contrast to happiness and allows its experience.

Einstein was right. Everything is relative. Including happiness. If you win the lotery, have a supermodel scientist who loves you as a girlfriend and plenty of friends who care about you, then you might think you are happy. But just then, your mother dies. Not so happy anymore, are you?
I agree with mithril, we live for the struggle. when i will finally get the nobel prise i will have lost my no 1 reason to live... But i'm not worried, i've got a lot of work to do until then :wink:

You could say we're the only animals that can be happy, depending if other animals feel emotion.

I think all creatures feel emotins but not like humans and also as we are humans i don't think we will know too much about their feelings.
