I would guess because both are extreme environments for us.
Desert has too little water – Ocean has too much water and too much salt Desert is too hot – ocean is too cold Too much light in the desert – too little light in the ocean Both have limited plant life – in the desert because of the lack of water, in the ocean due to lack of light (except close to surface).
