Why do you need water? The answers will be similar.

Think about metabolism.
Think about how protiens function and form in aqueous solutions.
Think about nutrient up take
Think about mechanisims of motility

Water is a solvent to many nutrients/ions that bacteria need. That is one reason.
Forgive him, for he believes that the customs of his tribe are the laws of nature!
