It makes perfect sense. There are situations where the only safe solution is the use of force. If someone assaults me, he can expect to have a fight on his hands.

Of course minimal necessary force is always the rule. Some situations require more than others, and excessive force can be very bad. But he mentioned twenty people ganging up on him; I can easily understand how that situation can quickly turn violent.
