similarities in respiration and photosynthesis

i have a huge last minute writing assignment due tomorrow.
i dont know any similarities between respiration and photosynthesis.
help?

In my opinion, both 2 processes produce ATP via electron transport system

okay. they both produce ATP via electron transport chain as above mentioned.

they are both cyclic

cellular respiration does not exist without photosynthesis and vice versa.

try and look at reactents and products necessary for both. that should help you out a lot

they are not both cyclic. Rather they both have acyclic(photochemical reaction in photosynthesis and glycolysis) and cyclic(Krebs and Calvin cycles) pathways

I know that your assignment was already due, but thought that posting an additional response might be helpful to others.

Both processes, photosynthesis and cellular respiration, generate ATP, the cellular "energy currency".

Photosynthesis
Through photosynthesis, plants and some photosynthetic microbes can harness energy from the sun and, with the addition of CO2 and water, ultimately turn that energy into food.

The reaction is:
sunlight energy + CO2 + water ---> food energy (glucose) + O2 + water

There are two phases of photosynthesis. The first, the light reactions, convert sunlight energy into ATP.The second phase, the Calvin Cycle, uses the ATP to convert CO2 into sugar.

Cellular Respiration
Cellular respiration is when food energy is converted into ATP, an energy form that can be used to fuel many different reactions and processes within the cell.

It is kind of like the reverse of what happens in the Calvin Cycle. The cell is taking glucose and turning it into ATP.

The reaction is:

food energy (glucose) + O2 + water --> ATP + CO2 + water

If you wanna get technical...

Photosynthesis doesn't actually produce sugar, but rather glyceraldehyde-phosphate, a 3C sugar that is later converted to fructose-6-phosphate.

The "reaction" of photosynthesis:
6CO2 + 6H2O + E --> C6H12O6 + 6O2

The "reaction" of cellular respiration:
C6H12O6 + 6O2 --> 6CO2 + 6H2O + E(686 Kcal)
the 686 kcal are stored in 38(or 36 depending on the cell) ATP molecules, thus with an efficiency of 38%. The overall reaction would look something like this:

C6H12O6 + 6O2 + 38ADP + 38 Pi --> 6CO2 + 6H2O +38 ATP

I avoid using the term reaction for metabolic processes as they sometimes confuse students, making them believe a single chemical reaction takes place. I usually use "overall reaction"

I prefer to use the term "net reaction" for that :mrgreen:

yeah, net reaction might be a better English term
