R-factors- antibiotic resistance?

Postby allabout on Tue Dec 18, 2007 7:35 pm

Antibiotic resistance is caused both by mutation within bacterial cells and transfer of antibiotic resistance plasmids (R-factors) from one bacterium to another bacterium.

Why does the latter cause the biggest problem in regard to proliferation of antibiotic resistance?

Well just think in term of spread of the resistance if it is on a plasmid or inside a chromosome. What difference the location would make?
