beetroot cell membrane and ethanolcan anyone point me in the right direction to find out about the effect of ethanol on beetroot cell membrane? i.e. how does ethanol disrupt and denature the plasma membrane? thanks
Wait isn't esterfication taking an alcohol and combining them with an acid or perhaps other things, and as a by product it leaves water?
Normally it takes a strong acid doesn't it? i.e Acetic acid and Ethanol added and even distilled won't make ethyl acetate. If you add H2SO4, a dehydrating agent, also a strong acid, and then distill you get Ethyl acetate. At least in chemistry.. i don't know if the terms are the same or not in biology but i don't see how that would be different so wouldn't it just destroy the cell by osmosis or something? Sorry if this post wasn't helpful but if it wasn't, then explain to me whatever it is i'm missing haha thanks >_< A forum that applies biology and chemistry for the amateur scientist.
