I want to know how can i kill the bactera not the good gene

today,my teacher in cell engineering science told me that we should kill the bacteria before using the serum for substrate.I think we maybe kill the useful element or gene that would help the cell growth.so I want to know how can i kill the bactera but the good element.

I don't think killing the cell would destroy the dna/gene.
