Hot topic for Botany - Possible new blue light receptor

Postby MrMistery on Thu Jun 07, 2007 7:03 am

As some of you might know, receptors for blue light in plants have proven the most elusive to chemically identify. Currently, 2 main blue light receptor families are known: cryptocrome and phototropin.

A novel gene family has been discovered, that appears to code for a blue light receptor involved in circadian rithms. The protein has been termed ZEITLUPE protein. Here is the paper:

Hi,

Not to sound too ignorant but what does this mean in real world and semi-layman terms? Does ZTL create receptors like cryptocrome? Or is ZTL part of the receptor itself?

cheers
