Hey guys, this forum is great, I havn't needed to make a single post because most of my questions are answered in the various categories. But I am having a little trouble tackling some questions.
I have a small assignment due and I need to pick 3 out of 4 of these questions to do. Maybe you could help me get the ball rolling as I know most of the material farely well.
Which question do you think is the hardest?
Q.1 An orange juice company once used the slogan, "A day without orange juice is like a day without sunshine". In a very real sense, the structure of the orange and the energy contained in it IS literally transformed sunshine. Explain in SOME DETAIL how the orange tree collected the energy of the sun and stored it in the fruit, and VERY BRIEFLY how your body would get it out again. (20 Marks)
(I got that I need to get material from photosynthesis, respiration, and biochemistry)
Q.2 A population of salamanders has blue spots on a black background. The blue spots expressed as a result of a single dominant allele for a controller gene that is nearly universal in the population. A neighbouring population on a small island is all black, but individuals can still interbreed with the original population in controlled experiments. Explain how the island population may have come to differ from the original mainland population over time. (20 Marks)
(Most likely I will start with molecular genetics (replication, mutation) and then go to the evolution part (population genetics))
Q.3 A young girl is suffering from a wasting disease because she fails to make enough of a regulatory protein that turns off a lipase enzyme in her muscles and adipose cells. Explain how a normal person would manufacture the regulatory protein and explain AT LEAST THREE distinct ways in which the girl's disorder may arise. (20 Marks)
(This one will be Molecular genetics (transcription, translation, gene regulation) and the biochemistry unit (protein form and function).)
Q.4 Testosterone, a steroid, indices many cells in the body to produce more receptors for human growth hormone (HGH), a peptide. HGH causes increased rates of anabolic processes. How would the two hormones differ in their action on the same cell, how would each be regulated, and what specific changes would you expect to see in a cell if both hormones were present in the blood? What other hormones might you expect to be released at the same time, and why?
(Homeostasis (feedback and regulation, modes of hormone action) and some biochemistry (anabolism).
Any help is highly appreciated. Thank you for at least reading.
the end of photosynthesis for the energy storage molecules is glucose, which is the primary energy source for animals which include us.
Number 2 I guess you can add a little more about the evolution part. You got most of it.
3 ways the lipase enzyme dont work.
1. gene mutated at the DNA level
2. The 3D folding of the enzyme had problems ( happens a lot for these enzymes).
3. if u want to talk about gene regulation, then there could be a problem with the biochemical pathway that turns it on at either the gene level or the post translational level. Also happens a lot.
4. This mainly deals with the difference between steroid and peptide hormones and the effects of these 2 specific hormones. Very brief explanation. One sentence for each answer.
