Preserving animals in jars?

What is the method and required tools for amateur animal preservation in jars? Please give me information on different species, like fish, reptiles, small mammals etc.

Also, how long do these last if not indefinitely?

There are a lot of approaches - but generally the chemicals that do the initial preservation are not what you want to store the specimens in.
