Green Mosquito

Postby citizenshane on Thu Mar 22, 2007 3:06 am

I am Canadian and have seen tons of mosquitos all over the country. My family has a cottage 40 minutes outside of Sudbury, Ontario where I saw a single green mosquito once in 34 years. I was reading this article about GM mosquitos with green eyes that could fight malaria which reminded me of my green mosquito sighting and did a google search to find this was the onlygreen mosquito posting that was not related to a WW2 aircraft.

Green Mosquito(?)

Postby R. Greenstreet on Sat May 19, 2007 6:15 pm

Hello, I also found what appears to be a green "mosquito." We have a "bug zapper," which is similar to a miniature tennis racquet. We thought that we were "zapping" a small mosquito, but after we shocked it, I saw that it was green. We got a magnifying glass and it looked exactly like the pictures in this website. As it turns out, I do not yet have a digital camera (so no pictures), and I was able to free the little fellow from the zapper (likely because the batteries are getting low). The high voltage did burn both of his front legs off, but after about 30 minutes, it uprighted itself, and may have been able to fly away. I did not kill it because I was not sure that it's actually a mosquito. Whatever it is, its antennae look like yours and its length is about 2mm. BTW, we are in the state of Wisconsin, USA (about 1.5 hours northwest of the city of Chicago, Illinois). Regards, R. Greenstreet gstreet(at)indy(dot)net

green mosquito sighting in Ohio

Postby firegirl on Wed Jun 06, 2007 5:09 pm

I live in northwest Ohio - just east of Toledo near Lake Erie. I have seen 3 of these "green mosquitos" and someone I work with has also seen 1. Still curious for definitive identification. Mosquitos are a hot topic around here because of West Nile Presence (not an epidemic).

green mosquito sighting in Ohio

Postby firegirl on Thu Jun 07, 2007 2:58 pm

Two have these "green mosquitos" landed on my arm at two different times. I was not bitten. One of them was in my house; I swatted it and it did spill red as a well fed mosquito would. [/quote]

I had caught by using a lastic container. And it was an coincident that I saw it sitting on wall.

Luminient eyes of moths are normal. as they are noturnal they require that.

Hmm, that is cool. Maybe it is a case of endosymbiosis. It digested an organism with chloraphyll or something. Ok that is nonsense, but the green would seem to indicate something with photosynthesis.

Or maybe his buddy has a beemer and he is green with envy.
