i'd say if your doctor was good he'd check it first then later (say after the consult) he'd let the nurse check it. This is because of something called the 'white coat effect' or something like that, its meant to increase the patient's pressure slightly. - in reality though most doctors don't have enough time for this, just let the nurses check it.

Kyle is right. If you still do not understand, think of it like this: You pick up your human biology book and it says:
Normal blood pressure: at the neck-value a; at the left arm-value b; at the right arm-value c; and so on.
Due to the need of some form of standars it has been decided to measure it at the left arm while you are sitting down. But, wherever you measure it, if your instrument is well adjusted, it is accurate
