Any ideas what this is??

Postby nugget » Sun Jan 07, 2007 2:13 pm

I did a lot of exploring on the coast in Tasmania and i came across these weird jelly things im not sure what they are. anyone have an idea?? there were many jelly fish in the water though, bt i dont hink these are jelly fish because they didnt have anything visible. They were alll over the beach. Could they be a part of an organism that has come out? there were SO many!!

The second image i also dont know what they are they were tube like things u could see a bit indented in the sand. When u touch them they receded inwards and left a puddle of water, i tried to dig around it but it seemed like they were attatched to some kind of rock nderneath? we couldnt pull them out. Curiosity was killing us haha. Any ideas what they are? some sort of anemone perhaps?

Thanks!
I hope these work

hmm, this has puzzled me too. We have many of these in our area on our local beaches. I hadn't thought much of it, I always assumed they were jellyfish, until I started to really learn about marine biology. I'll look into it if someone doesn't answer right away.

Oh btw your other "tube like things" I believe are Pachycerianthus fimbriatus. They are a tube dwelling anemone that live in mud and sand. They have brown/black tentacles that stick through.

I think this is what it is, though your picture is a little fuzzy, so I could very well be mistaken.

but i looked up that anemone and there were no tentacles that look like that, but then again i could be mistaken.
