writing a research paper

I am in biomedical engineering major and now I need to write a research paper for 5-10 pages. I choose the topic on "genetic modified food" but thinking that the topic is kind of too big. Should I narrow it or generalize GM food?

Also, does anyone has resources on how to write a good research paper? the format to write it, or links that I can get some information from?

Havent you written a report before? hmm well ok i would ask my professor how they would prefer we set it out, first see what they prefer and if they do not specify it, then we'll talk again...

I only wrote a research paper for english writing class and that's not really the one my BME prof wants, she wants a scientific paper..... actually we are not limited to any topic but only need to about BME. My prof just assigns this hw and didn't say much about it...

Research paper can be divided into two kinds: Research report paper & Research review paper.

For report paper, we must mention: Abstract/Summary, Introduction, Material and Method, Result, Discussion, Conclusion (optional), Acknowledgment (optional), and References.

For review paper, the format is more free, depends on your topic, but adequate and decent references must be quoted. Public magazines, free e-articles, and/or newspapers are not allowed. Textbooks, journals, e-books, and scientifical magazines are okay. You can divide your topic into parts, which should be systematically and not overlap with another parts.

Pay attention for the langauge and writting style. Report paper use to apply passive style, while review paper is free but you should avoid use public/conversatinal words.

I mean that is exactly what all my teachers say they wanted the format of my papers, especially about no internet sources. That is good because some proffesors allow internet citation, and it may not be a credable source. If I do research online, I try to only use University or Government, or e-book sources.

Thanks Dr. stein. I got what you meant by the two different kind of paper. I think my paper should be a research review paper. So, for the report paper, there are topics for each part. What about review paper? Can I write subtopics? I mean, like...

Abstract
Introduction
background
Method
Transformation
xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
Gene splicing
xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

I have one more question about the resources... Since I couldn't find the background/history information about GM food from the school library database which are peer-reviewed. Is it good to use those search links from the google/yahoo?

No hun, those links are not always reliable resources, and i personally would not use them in a research paper
