I am confused because in the Chardakovs experiment...
Once the potato chips have been removed from the solution.
And its left with the sucrose solution and the methylene blue stain is the sucrose solution considered to have tissue?
This probably sounds stupid. But I read this passage, and I have now become MORE confused:
The Chardokov method provides a quick means to determine plant tissue water potentials. This method depends on the change in density in a solution that occurs after a tissue has been immersed in it. The solution gains or looses water depending on the water potential of the tissue. If the density of a solution does not change (no net movement of water) then this solution has the same water potential as the tissues that were incubated in it. It is assumed that solute movement between tissue and solution is negligible. Density changes can be observed by watching whether a drop of the original solution floats or sinks in the test solution after tissue incubation. Alternately, for a more accurate measurement of changes in the solution density, a refractometer can be used.

It's a pitty for a biologist. Sorry that was a mean joke - I sometimes don't understand things too so I need somebody else for explanations.
OK, let's back to the thing. I see it like that:
You have solutions with different concentrations of sucrose and you have also portions of these solutions dyed with methylene blue. You submerge the potato chips, let's say, in every unstained probe and incubate for about 1,5h and swirl from time to time.
That will cause water flow out from the potato cells or into them by means of osmosis, depending on their water potencial. Then you put the drop of dyed solution (those prepared earlier) in the middle lenght of the sucrose solution depth.
Methylene blue drop will sink, float or stay in place depending on density of the sucrose solution after incubation with potato tissues. The tube with concentration that don't change position of methylene blue drop has the same water potencial as the cells of that your test potato.
