human/neanderthal crosses?could humans and neanderthals have crossbred? so that their genes would be passed through in the human race? if so, how would we detect the genes?
Well yea of course we could of cross bred. Any member of the same family can cross-breed. They have even already found skeletons with mixtures of Homo Sapien and Neanderthal features, so we now now it has already been done.
No, it is never true. SOMETIMES, members of the same genus can cross-breed, but it is by no means a rule. What IS true, however, is that ALL members of the same species can breed.
Re: human/neanderthal crosses?
Were you thinking of anyone in particular? I know a couple of people who I'm sure are space aliens, but don't know where to get alien DNA to check them against... I think the current mainstream view is that Neanderthals were genetically quite different, even though they may have survived long enough to live parallel to modern humans for some time. But in this view, they were not capable of mixing with our ancestors. But I'm not sure the last word is spoken on this one. I would like to believe than some day it may be possible to get hold of Neanderthal DNA and check it out. I also read where someone tried to make a connection between the Basques and the Neanderthals, since apparently the Basque region of SW Europe was the last major bastion of the Neandethals. The Basques have a high concentration of the rare blood type O-negative. But I don't think there was any evidence other than that.
I watched an interesting broadcast about this. That they now know the neanderthals did not just vanish out of existence because they were less superior (recent findings show they were highly intelligent), they were
absorbed by inter- breeding. Hopefully they will find even more evidence of this. Re: human/neanderthal crosses?
As far as I'm concerned all u say is correct
I agree with Linn I don't think homo sapiens and neanderthals could cross breed, which ultimately led to the neanderthals extinction.

well I just need to see more evidence than the one skeleton that they found. But its an interesting concept because why would they just suddenly vanish? They were quite "fit" for survival and stronger than modern man. according to the latest research @weesper:
They do have the dna mostly sequenced already BTW I swear I saw a neanderthal walking down the street today. He even had tht bridge on his forhead, fun info: http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/nova/neanderthals/skulls.html "How far you go in life depends on your being tender with the young, compassionate with the aged, sympathetic with the striving and tolerant of the weak and strong.
