Are blood platelets cells? As the topic...Do the blood platelet can be a cell?
Correct me if I'm wrong but, platelets are cell fragments , not cells. As much as I remember they are particles of megakaryocytes (I'm not sure about the spelling) .

Hmm.. maybe. But the term 'cell fragments' sounds more logical to me. I don't know why...

I think defensivor actually posed a good question then, since we know the definition of a cell should platelets or anucleated cells(red-blood cells) be exceptions?

I have lots of bio books and most simply name them cell fragments. I have a book that talks about tromocytes at frogs(which we know are cells) and calls them blood platlets... This is wrong... But if you are ever asked if blood platlets are cells at anything other than mamals you should say yes(remember, IT IS GENERALLY ACCEPTED THAT ONLY MAMALS HAVE BLOOD PLATLETS)

My biology book says, "a small enucleated blood cell important in blood clotting; derived from large cells in the bone marrow".
