An RNA-dependent protein kinase is involved in tunicamycin-induced apoptosis and Alzheimer's disease
In 2005, among many other cases, a prominent Japanese scientist who published two major papers in Nature (H. Kawasaki and K. Taira Nature 423, 838?842; 2003 and Nature 431, 211?217; 2004) could not produce the corresponding experimental data. The first paper had already been retracted (Nature 426, 100; 2003) and the second corrected (Nature 431, 878; 2004). An investigation panel asked Taira to submit samples and notebooks relating to the experiments, but the researcher in his lab who ran the experiments did not have them. It is obvious that references to those papers will appear, be it only to state that they are likely to be faked, but this will obviously increase the Impact Factor of the journal... In spring 2006, investigation about RNA work in Taira's group (at least 12 papers published in quite "visible" journals are probably fakes).
All the 12 papers indicated in natutre are written by Dr. Kawasaki, an assistant researcher working for Dr. Taira at Univ of Tokyo as the report in nature.
The papers shown above are diffrent from the 12 paperes, and the first authers are other persons. The work of the CELL paper is done in a famous US lab, by one of graduates of Dr Taira's lab. The EMBO paper was witten by another person.
We found further suspious papers of the groupe.

Cells in wells and Western blotting analysis of cells after transfection with specific siRNA expression vectors. The target of each vector is indicated. The experiments were performed under the same conditions as those shown in Fig. 2. N1, negative control 1, siRNA expression vector targeted against Renilla luciferase; N2, negative control 2, siRNA expression vector targeted against HCV. pU6i indicates the empty siRNA expression vector.
