A molecule of DNA contains combinations of certain coumpounds (adenine, thymine, cytosine, and guanine). Sets of 3 of these are called codons. When DNA is transcribed to mRNA, the thymines are replaced by uracil.
This mRNA is fed through a ribosome, and each codon (set of 3) codes for a certain amino acid. When an entire section of the mRNA is fed through the rybosome, these strings of codons produce many amino acids, which form proteins. These proteins carry out various functions, depending on what they are. So basically, DNA is transcribed to mRNA, which is then translated into a protein (by way of a ribosome), and the sequence of that DNA (and thus mRNA as well) produces particular proteins.
