That could be a possibility, James. But think of it: if you were a man living 2 milion years ago(or whenever the first animal has started to be domistacated) and you had a choise which animal would you choose to have around: would you take the wolf? You would probably take the horse or something like that because it is more useful and you can feed it grass, so you don't have to share your food. Food was hard to get those days, they didn't have shotguns for hunting Plus, the early man had a simple way of thinking: he knew wolf sometimes attack people, so wolfs are bad, so he tried to stay away from them.

What came first domestication for food or domestication for other uses, eg pets, transport etc?

I would probably think most likely it would be domestication for food, but then it could have been transport etc..

hmm. I think in the future the only sensible way to save animals is to have them as pets or put them in zoos. I luv animals in the wild but as things are going now i rather take them out of the wild and therefore save them. Humans will never be satiated with the "meager" land they have now. I mean just look at the Bush adm. It's really alfyl with all the habitat destruction. But think. Making animals pets does save them from death. And life is ALWAYS better than better given the choice.

Horses as the indians domesticated them a long time ago. I dont think dogs were domesticated first because all my history books and scientists ive talked to say that the horse was domesticated first HORSES ROCK!!!!!

Just a note, horse were first domesticated in Asia and spread all over Eurasia, mainly for transport. They reached the Americas only with the spanish in the 16th century. American wild horses domesticated by indians were the descent of horses gon wild during the conquest of the america.

I agree. The rate of destruction of natural habitats sickens me. People nowadays seem to be more concerned with money than the quality of a healthy life, in my opinion. As cheesy as it may sound it's amazing to see a strong bond between man and certain animals, dogs and horses, in particular. They practically become a part of the family. I think unless a person is not willing to treat a pet as a member of the family then they shouldn't have one.

I think that the first domesticated animals were dogs, followed by chickens, then goats//sheep, then cattle, and then horses. However llamas//alpacas may have been domesticated earlier than dogs by South Americans, but they did not keep a good record.

especially when its a dog.
People should not get a dog if they cant devote time for them, they are social animals and can get very depressed.
