Can someone please explain splitting water?I have a test on photosynthesis and mytext or professor did not clearly explain splitting water. Is it when the hydrogen and oxygen are split?
The molecule of clorophile a, when struck by light(so to say) ejects 2 electrons from it's molecule. These electrons(containing lots of energy) are taken by a transporting chain. The molecule of a clorophile now has the power to extract 2 electrons(which it is lacking) from the water molecule. The reaction is as follows:
H2O +light --> 2H+ +2e- +1/2O2 The electrons are absorbed by the clorophile molecule, oxygen is released into the athmosphere and the protons are later used in photosynthesis If this is too much info, then sorry "I have no intention of stopping anytime soon.
