The Estrus Cycle Canine: Bitch Puberty occurs at 6 months of age. They generally cycle every 6 months (Variable with breed/size) A. Proestrus: Increased follicular activity in the ovaries. Physical signs: Vulva will swell, vaginal bleeding. Vaginal Cytology: RBC’s, WBC’s & parabasal epithelial cells Lasts: 7-10 days B. Estrus: “Standing Heat”. Most receptive and most fertile at this time. This is the period just prior to ovulation. Physical signs: Lack of bloody discharge- becomes clear Vaginal Cytology: Few cells, clear background Lasts: 3-5 days C. Metestrus/Diestrus: Period that immediately follows ovulation. CL is producing progesterone. Not fertile a this time. Vaginal Cytology: Many WBC’s, fewer epithelial cells Lasts: 80-90 days *If the dog does not become pregnant, the CL will diminish. * Pseudocyesis: False Pregnancy. When the CL does not completely diminish. These dogs will look and act pregnant, some will go through a nesting phase, false labour, and depression when no pups are produced. D. Anestrus: Most variable period of activity in the dog. Hormone levels are low, animals is non-receptive and exhibits no signs of sexual behaviours. Physical signs: Small and dry vulva, small mammary glands. Vaginal Cytology: Large numbers of epithelial cells. Lasts: 100-135 days * FSH activity increases after this phase, and the cycle begins again. Feline: Queen. Reach puberty at 7-12 months of age. * Induced Ovulators: Need coitus to ovulate. If a cat goes into season, they will stay in until bred. If a male cat is not present, the cycle lasts ten days longer. 1) Proestrus: Increased activity, rubs against objects and rolls freuquently 2) Estrus: Crouch with tail und up in the air. Tail moves from side to side and she will accept the male. Equine: Mare. Reach puberty at 10-24mos of age (generally 18mos) *Polyestrus: Several estrus cycles per year. Their natural breeding season is from May through August. 1) Estrus cycle: Approx. 21 days 2) Standing Heat: Estrus- lasts 5 days 3) Veterinarian can predict ovulation based on visual exam and palpation 4) Vaginal cytology not performed because changes are not distinctive enough to determine stage of cycle. Bovine: Cow * Polyestrus. 1) Cycle lasts 21 days 2) Estrus Lasts: 18 hours 3) Signs: nervousness, vocal, attempt to mount other animals, thick and clear mucous discharge from vulva. 4) Bleeding occurs at the end of estrus- going into metestrus. At this stage it is too late to breed the cow.
No no, not "maybe". I said "could be" because acnes or pimples can be caused (1) genetically, means the over expression of androgen-regulatory related gene, and this is inherited, or (2) individual body metabolism, or (3) life-style, means that this is individual and not inherited, e.g. diet, environment, hygiene, etc.
