Fotosynthesis and Respiratory process

Hi guys, i need help.

Lately at school, we've started on a project about microorganism life.

Unfortunatly, i was teamed up with 1 dope, who can't remember a thing of what has been going on.

And i've been hospitalised because of my disease Cystic Fibrosis, followed by a nasty pseudomonas infection.

So, i've been away from classes in almost 2 weeks.

I finally arrive and get a project, a very important one at that from my biology teacher in high school.

I have to do a report on our 4 experiments of the subject.

Earth Respiration
Yeast Activity
Alchohol Destilation
Plants Fotosynthesis and Respiratory process

And it has to be done this friday. So im in really deep **** here.

1 of my 2 team mates is doing "Earth Respiration" report
And im doing the "Plants Fotosynthesis and Respiratory process" report
And the dope is doing the other 2. Im gonna check em though to see if he's doing this correctly.

Anyways, im having trouble understand the respiratory and fotosynthesis process of plants. How the hell do they work.

Im having a hard time figuring out how they work, and im really stressed out at the moment, biology isn't one of my majors and i have this big math project i need to get done by friday as well.....

Im gonna die of stress soon, and im only 17....

Can you guys help me.
Mucho apreciated if you guys could share your knowledge.

First of all you need to understand that the 2 processes you are doing your assingment on are probably the biggest ones in vegetal biology. Saying everything about them would be impossible.
Now:
Photosynthesis: in this process the plant synthesizes sugars from CO2 in the air and H2O from the ground. The plant is able to take some of the energy reaching it through sunlight through a set of asimilatory pigments(the most important one is clorophile, the stuff that makes plants green). THE PROCESS IS DEPENDENT OF SUNLIGHT.
Respiration: in this process the plant brakes down the sugars created in the photosynthesis process in order to produce energy. THIS PROCESS IS DEPENDENT OF OXYGEN. From one molecule of glucose you get 6CO2, 6H2O and 675 kcal(about 60% of this energy is lost through heat, the rest is converted into 36(or 38) molecules of ATP)As you probably know ATP is the way that plants store energy. If oxygen can not enter the plant(like in a flood) the plant can survive for about a week through anaerob respiration(the energy produced here is 16-30kcal) and then dies.

Thanks for the brief explanation.

Also, i think you ended up triple posting.
Read them all to be sure :p

And lastly, what if i explained the process of the experiments?

Could that help you.

I just found out its called photosynthesis in the US.

So im am gonna search on the forums, did before but no result because i searched for fotosynthesis.

1. Respiratory Earth.

The assignment was as follows.
WE have this "respirometer" in wich we put in dirt from the outside, and in the respirometer was this cage/canister like thing.

KOH (Kaliumhydroxid) was put in this.

The respirometer would be applied a lid and left overnight.

The next day.

The microorganisms would have released some CO2 and that would bind with the KOH.

Respiratoy: C6H12O6(s) + 6 O2(g) --> 6 CO2(g) + 6 H2O(l) + Energi

And this would occur
OH + CO2 -> HCO3 (the K doesn't link with anything so its rather useless here)

HCO3-(aq) + OH-(aq) ------> CO32-(aq) + H2O(l)

And here, my teacher said this happens. And this is mostly the only part i don't understand why. Perhaps you can help me with this and with how the respiratory process works in this project.

CO2 + H2O <-> H2CO3 <-> H+ + HCO3 <-> H + CO3

The assignement was then to find out how much CO2 was taken by the KOH.

And that was done by titrating with HCl

KOH(aq) + HCl(aq) ----------> KCl(aq) + H2O(l)

2. Plants Photosynthesis and Respiratory process

The assignment went like this.

We had 8 glasses. 4 of 8 were really important.

we had 4 glasses, all were filled with water.

We poured about 3-5 drops of BTB ( a liquid chemical that makes water blue).
And we blew CO2 into 2 of the 4 in order to pack'em with CO2 (This would make the water green)

Now, we would then put a stilk of Waterpest ( A water plant) into all 4 glasses.

Shut them with lids, and cover 2 of the 4 with staniol (a silver paper like thingie in wich light cant come through).
Now we'd have this.
1. An uncovered glass with blue water and a water plant
2. an uncovered glass with green water and a water plant
3. A covered glass with blue water and a water plant
4. A covered glass with green water and a water plant.

The last remaing 4 glasses were basicly repeated as above, but without the plants, simply to see if there would be a difference in color (meaning if the plant would photosynthesize or respirate).

Next day

1. An uncovered glass with blue water and a water plant
Nothing happened - Water was still blue

2. an uncovered glass with green water and a water plant
Water changed colors somewhat - The plant photosynthesized and sucked in the CO2, so the water became blue

3. A covered glass with blue water and a water plant
The water respirated and released a small amount of CO2.
So the water gained a greenish color here.

4. A covered glass with green water and a water plant
Not sure why, but the color of the water became somewhat yellow.
I don't know what the water plant would have done this time. It can't photosynthesize because of no light, so it must have respirated. And given out CO2 giving the water a somewhat yellowish color.

How does the respiration and photosynthesize work in this assignment.??

Well, there is nothing complicated here. In the uncovered glasses light could get through and the plant photosynthesized, thus sucking CO2 from the water and releasing oxygen(from what i understand oxygen doesn't influencethe colour of your substances)
In the covered glasses the plant could not photosynthesize so, through the process of cellular respiration, it absorbed oxygen from the water and released CO2, this coloring the water green.
By the way in the 4th glass i don't think that is yellow, i think it is a light green. Releasing more CO2 into the water made it more green

Ok.
But my teacher said that the process photosynthesis and Respiratory works because of enzymes and ATP.

Just a really brief explanation of this would be wonderfull.

And yeah, Oxygen does not affect the indication fluid in the water.

All reactions need enzymes. But note that photosynthesis needs light to occur (together with CO2). And respiration needs O2 .

Yeah, so i reckoned.

But what i don't know is how the enzymes work in the process of photosynthesis and respiration.

What does the enzyme trigger.

Im looking for the chain reaction?
