Lions x Elephants

Postby andred1972 » Thu Dec 22, 2005 8:02 pm

I have a doubt, and I don't know anyone that could clarify it to me.

Lions are known to kill young elephants, while acting as a pack. Even adult females can be killed that way. Could a single lion prey upon an elephant? What about an male adult preying upon a male adult elephant?

Since lions kill elephants, why elephants scare off lions when competing by water resources?

It seems weird to me that an animal (even a BIG elephant) moves next to its predator in any circunstances.

Could anyone answer that to me? Or point me references on the web?

Thank you very much.

the bility of animals to think logically is limited (not like us), don't bring it as a human's point of you know our lovely friend named 'instinct'? I think you'll know the answers if you can define our friend above...
Q: Why are chemists great for solving problems?
A: They have all the solutions.

1. NO, a male mature lion can not kill a male mature healthy elephant. It is just too big. If they hunt in packs, they may b able to bring the elephant down, but why hunt a big strong elephant when you can hunt a small weak one?
2. Even if the lion could kill an elephant, the elephant had 2 choises: die of thirst or go drink in the same place as the lion...

A male lion can actually be able to kill a young elephant. They are very skilled hunters and the young elephants have not witnessed much fighting so they do not know how it is done. i'm not saying that male lions can always kill young elephants, because often times the mother is guarding it. but if they get lost or strangle behind, a Male lion might have a shot at it, despite it's size difference. Hope this helps! - Mr B
