I think that you could be right re the press coverage on this, because, if it is a new disease that has emerged, perhaps coupled with insects behaving differently than hitherto, (maybe because of global warming, or the powerful insecticides used on farm animals causing insects to move onto people more), it is a good story.
Many distinguished and powerful people are discussing it now, all over the place.
On an educational and academic site such as this, we naturally speculate about a whole range of theories and hypotheses in the course of our discussion.
If it does end up on the media, maybe more will be done to elicit the truth of the matter.
Only medical doctors can say whether a new illness has emerged or not. It's amazing the power that they have. A person can be lying in a hospital bed, brain dead, but they are only actually legally dead when the doctors have performed the requisite tests, and have pronounced them as such. Yet, they were really every bit as dead before, (physically, but not legally).
If any person really has this, and it is a new disease, think how things might change if and when you are diagnosed. Any management of change should take account of tools such as the force field analysis, e.g. PESTL. (Political, Economic, Social, Technological, Legal and ethical).
I would use this time of 'limbo' to exercise intelligent decision making powers. Really think about all of the sub-headings above. It might help you to take a break from only thinking about this horrible disease, if only for a short time. It's a right brain left brain thing.
The brain dead person in the analogy cannot do anything prior to being diagnosed dead, because he or she is already dead, (at any time that they are brain dead). An exception might be the contents of an advance directive being fulfilled, (they have been able to exercise advance control, that they could not do at the time of diagnosis).
Is there anything that you might do now, that you might not be able to, at or after the time of diagnosis?
Of course, many of the results of receiving an accurate diagnosis, hitherto denied, will be good. Receiving proper treatment is worth anything, but this might involve a lot of time etc., so think about planning your lives around all of that.

I do echo Cilla's comments that, wherever possible, it would
be of great benefit to present information in a more readable
format otherwise the contents of this thread could be easily
dismissed as we've seen by some comments posted.
I do understand that we're dealing with something extremely
complex here and the people who can talk at the level should
do so. Just please spare a thought once in a while for people
who are trying to pull all this information together into a format
that can be presented to a GP for instance!

One final word for now: given that there seems to be something
attracting arthropods/insects to the sufferers of this condition,
