Symbiosis

Postby MrMistery on Wed Mar 09, 2005 9:40 pm

Hey guys, help me out here. I had a big argument with my biology teacher today. She said that symbiosis is always benefical for both organisms involved in this process.
However, i've read about a parasitic symbiosis that is the symbiosis found between a parasite and it's host, which means it is benefical for only one of the organisms. So, the question is:
Can symbiosis be benefical for only one of the organisms participating to it?

Poison did give some real information. the website links were useful to me and answered the question. I actually think if you bothered to read the first website then the kids teacher may actually be wrong. It says that at least one of the members in the symbiotic relationship benefits but the other may be injured or die. This is what happens with parasites and there host (usually). So how can both benefit?
Sounds like she was giving you a nice simple answer as most school teachers do, but it never is that simple. But i dont think its worth arguing about.

I'm sory, I didn't express myself very well. My teacher and I are best friends and that wasn't an argument, it was more of a discution. Thank you Poison for the help. I'm glad to see that I was right :D :D

That's the best thing about science. It's not like politics where once you take a side, you have to stick with it. In science, it is perfectly acceptable for someone to say "Oh. You're right. I was wrong. Now I know."
