trancription geneguys......i have no idea what is this question all about......MY AP BIO question(ch11-the control of gene expression)........i have tried to understand but did not understand anything.....PLEASE HELP ASAP.
1)Transcription is generally controlled by the binding of a protein to a DNA sequence “upstream” from a gene, rather than by modification of RNA polymerase. Develop a hypothesis to explain why this is so. PLEASE DON'T JUST SAY " do your homework by your own" thnaks is advance.
can't you make a hypothesis ? maybe a better question is: do you know what a hypothesis is?
well you probably know that RNA-polymerase II forms a complex what a lot of transcription factors in eukaryotes. What you can state is that when we take a DNA-sequence and we incubate it with only RNA-polymerase II and the basic transcription complex proteins you can measure the activity on a gel. now we can do the same when we add gene regulatory proteins and modified RNAymerase II --> What is thus a good hypothesis ?
I'm also taking an AP BIO course right now, and we are in Ch. 19. I had that exact question a while back, and ironically enough, I went right along the lines of what sdekivit said. Just basically use that as a guideline, eventually, everything will just click and the question will seem so simple. Just give it a worl, you'll see.

well, this question is not easy to understand, but i try to do that.(maybe my English is not good enough, i study in Europe)
i think it means that , during transcription DNA information is ttansfered into mRNA by RNA polymerase which is a enzyme(protein). during this procedure, RNA polymerase is not changed(modification). meanwhile, we know that all the protein are made based on DNA sequences(genes).
