How to test the salt concentration of a potatoYou can test the concentration of salt by testing it in different solutions of salt water.
Cut a potato in cubes of equal dimension and weight them, if you can find a big potato to use it for all the experiments to have a control. A different potato may have a different concentration and thus change the results. You may want to use a few different potatoes to find the range because they are not all the same. This test is osmosis, water movement from the salt water to the potato of from the potato to the salt water. Place the potato in the known concentration of salt water. Tests can be done for various concentrations at the same time, time each for an equal amount of time. Pat dry the potato, with a clean paper towel, before weighting it to remove excess water. If the potato has a higher concentration of salt then the water then the potato will gain weight because the water will move to the higher concentrated (hypertonic) area to the lower concentrated (hypotonic) area. The potato will lose weight if the water is of higher concentration because the water will move out of the potato into the water. You can test concentrations of water until you find at what concentration the potato does not gain or lose weight. This is then the concentration of the potato. Being exact may take time but can be done. Hope you have fun.
