On the trail of neurons:San Diego Union Tribune, Nov. 2,2005Interesting article in the San Diego Union Tribune dated November 2, 2005 by Staff writer Bruce Lieberman.
Exactly how stem cells in the adult brain becomes neurons is a mystery. But scientists have now identified a molecule that appears to help trigger the change. Fred Gage, of the Salk Institute for Biological Studies in La Jolla, found that a protein called Wnt3 is critical to the proliferation of neurons in the brain. In all mammals, neurons are generated in two small parts of the brain: the olfactory bulb, which processes odors, and the hippocampus, which is involved in forming memories and learning. The Salk study was published Oct.27 in the Journal Nature. Be well, Rob Rob
