Rollie Pollie Awareness

Postby February Beetle » Wed Oct 05, 2005 2:36 pm

I asked my Zoology teacher when we were learning about arthropodes and the differences between centipedes and millipedes how you would classify a rollie pollie =
a Crustacean? really?
crazy. So I guess it is a land evolved crustacean, so gills or being able to live in water is not a definite characteristic of crustaceans? I just thought that was very interesting and since phylogeny is kind of a debatable subject what other information people had about these little arthropods.

Isopoda, suborder Oniscidea - I think it's the only suborder of Crustaceans adapted to life on land :?

i'ts about 1/2 inch in length, usually greyish black in color. The exoskeleton its made up of plates that overlap so that the insect can perform its main defensive position, which is basically rolling up into a ball hense the "rollie" part of its name. i have no idea what order it's in...i could use some information about it that's for sure.

If you think rollie pollies are cool, check out their big cousins:
