xylem upper, phloem lower

Why is the xylem higher in the vascular bundle than the phloem? Are there any advantages?

do you mean xylem inner and phloem outer?
I don't know about xylem upper and phloem lower.

no i do mean upper and lower, as in leaf veins actually.

Visualize the leaf as an extension of the main vascular cylinder. The xylem is to the inside, so as it branches out to the leaf, the xylem will be on top.

Maybe a picture would help more. let me know.

here, dave. Maybe it is more clear like this. Sorry i have absolutely no talent. I got an A in 5th grade for figuring this out 8)

ah makes sense, our bio teacher blubbed about how the xylem has to be on top for better support of the leaf because it hangs the leaf as opposed to pushing it up. I thought the difference of a few cell lengths was negligible.
