Giant squid sightings in Japan

So i was browsing through CNN last Wednesday looking for my gov't current event, and there was an Article about some Japanese scientists who had sigheted a Giant Squid on camera off the coast of Japan's Bonin islands. I know this is a major discovery since until now there had only been dead or washed up giant squid seen. Did anyone else hear of this? I may be, if you got it from cnn. Generally the giant squid is an animal that lives in cold and saline waters, in very stable conditions, so i find it hard to believe it can survive at the surface. In fact, i think i read somewhere that it can't.. Don't believe everything you read

But he is right.
The camera was just a bit far from the surface Andrew. It was automated and had a bait attached to it. They even managed to get a tentacle to the surface (I guess the squid was not happy about that ).
Their results and pictures were published in the Proceedings of the Royal Society B (sept 28th).

Why is it so hard for scientists to veiw Giant squid in the ocean? Is it because they live so deep its impossible to reach/see them?

Exactly, It is hard to go down at those depth, and there is no light. Until this sighting they were only known from dead body found stranded on beaches, and if I remember correctly in at least one instance, found inside sperm whale stomach.

Yeah, i saw that on discovery. Very cool. But when they cut the whale's stomach, they accidentally cut the gaz vesicle at the colon and the smell wasn't very nice

a giant squid?! when i was a kid it scared me to death, but now im rather fascinated by it. so this squid thing's true, isn't it? does the squid have a name to it yet?

You mean like a scientifical name? Sure, it as an animal like all others. Hollywood just gave it a bad name. But it is indeed a fascinating creature, and it is practically impossible for someone to be attacked by one...

aye me lads, squids are very interesting to see... them hydrophilics look good enough to eat... but still very interesting

Interesting thing, is that this isn't the first healty architeuthis specimen found. Just the first adult or close to adult specimen. Atempts have been made for some time now to raise larval archeteuthis in captivity. The larvae were identified genetically by comparing them to dead specimens. At that stage they are rather unremarkable squid larvae.

Giants squids must have been sighted before, where else would the old saliors tales about the monster come from? I wonder what phenomina would cause them to come to the surface though.
