Mysterious Tooth

Postby Sideshow » Fri Jun 20, 2014 6:07 pm

To any zoology & biology gurus or anyone else who's interested:

I am in possession of a canine tooth which was gifted to me while living in Honduras 16 years ago. I have always wondered what type of animal it came from. See attached images. It is 3-1/4" (82mm) long x 1/4" (7mm) diameter. I would be guessing that it came from either a cat-like carnivore or possibly monkey, tapir or even a musk deer. Let me know what your thoughts are.

Thanks in advance.

Hi Sideshow. It doesn't look like a cat to me. A bit too thin. Could be a monkey or as you suggest a musk deer, or, it could be just a piece of carved ivory, although, I suppose there is a hollow centre to it, at the top?

There does not seem to be hollow center to it. At the top end (looking down) it is solid. There was a hole drilled through near the top (which the leather goes through) and it is solid all the way through. Ignoring the obvious curve of the tooth, another slight clue would be that it isn't straight. Looking down, it has a slight turn or bend to it, like it belonged on the left or right side.

Interesting theory of the carved ivory. It's definitely a possibility. Thanks for the reply.
