Cannibalistic fishes in lake inside cave

Postby CaveFish » Wed Mar 05, 2014 7:46 pm

I heard on TV about cannibalistic fishes in one lake inside one cave. Fishes should be cannibalistic, otherwise the lake will become overpopulated.

Can you give me information, which is this cave, lake, fishes and do you have any link about this phenomenon.

Best regards

This is not an unusual phenomenon. It is standard that fish eat their own fry, and the more overcrowded a population becomes the more fry get eaten,- until there are virtually none left and the population has to age and many die before there is room for more fry to grow. Either the fish themselves would eat the dead fish, or some other organism in the cave would, which would probably in turn be eaten by the fish. If there is nothing in the cave capable of ingesting dead fish then the water would become poisoned and would kill everything in the cave pool.
