A question about what living organisms are made up of.

Postby Anonymous99 » Mon Mar 03, 2014 1:44 am

I know that living organisms are made up of carbon-based molecules and other molecules, I am wondering what is meant by carbon-based molecules? Is it meant that it consists of more carbon than other elements? What other molecules are a living organism made up of?

Thanks

Well, yes one could say that carbon is the main element. Carbon forms the backbone of most of the substances. Those are called organic molecules.
However, there are of course also some inorganic compounds present.

Cis or trans? That's what matters.

So, the cells are made up of carbon-based molecules. What other elements than carbon do the organic molecules that make up a cell consist of ? Thanks a lot.

They can contain any other element. However, the most prevalent are H, O, N, S, P...

Ok. Thanks, JackBean. They can contain any other element? What do you mean cells can contain any other element? Do you have any idea of, or is there any theories on why life as we know it is usually made up of these elements? Thanks

Why did you post a link to your google+ account instead of answering my question, JackBean ?

Thanks

Another question for you. JackBean, do you know who made the theory about the first life, or first mitochondria, and when it was made? Thanks
