What is the most promising field of study right now

Postby Morningstar2 » Sat Feb 22, 2014 6:14 am

Hello all
I'm a 4th year undergrad student at UCLA who also got into UCLA school of dentistry recently. It's always been the norm for Biology majors like myself to pursue dentistry, medicine, or other healthcare careers ... and the only reason why? it's ..... just because.
When I truly realize that the notion of looking inside other people's mouths for the rest of my life isn't really that appealing, I think I will consider declining the acceptance offer.

At this point, future salary isn't the main concern and I just want to do something I love that can be useful, and my family is ok with this decision. Biology and Chemistry are the two subjects that I'm insanely interested in, so I'm trying to look for grad school, maybe a state school. However, I also want to apply the knowledge that I will learn to discover something new - like new drugs or unique compounds from medicinal plants like in Asia. No disrespect to any teachers or researchers - my dad is also one - but I don't want to end up doing that either. So my question is, which path should I take? Should I just go for a regular Master's degree in biology (molecular?) and hope that things work out? My dad suggests me to apply to pharmacy school and go from there because then I would have more knowledge in that applied chemistry field? I'm open to any suggestions, but I just want to pursue an area that's extremely promising and can be useful in the future. Thank you again in advance, I'll always be grateful for your responses.

So you do or don't do that?

Cis or trans? That's what matters.

Regarding pharmacy, you might be more interested in pharmacology or medicinal chemistry. Molecular biology will also impact future medicinal chemistry. I suggest focusing toward chemistry, biochem and molecular biology - it sounds like you have a taste for that. Biological chemistry will be in demand and allow you to do interesting things in your career. There are opportunities in industry and government as well as in academia for those with training in biological chemistry.

This is the exact route I'm going. I kind of hate medicine but I like biological research. I also want to do something that is important and advances civilization. I was kin of interested in researching plant compounds but I'm open to other people's advice out there.
