Orientation of genes

When making a gene construct to be cloned, do we have to place the desired gene, the reporter gene and the marker gene in any specific direction or orientation? I have seen in most cases the desired gene and the reporter gene have placed in one direction and the marker gene has placed in the opposite direction. Is there any reason to do so?

I'd say it's in opposite direction to abolish transcriptional fusion.
