Is the renal medulla lighter in color?

The outer part, called the cortex, is a dark reddish brown color. The inner part, called the medulla, is lighter-colored.

But then there are websites that says: http://www.wisegeek.org/what-is-the-renal-cortex.htm

...the medulla is darker in color...the cortex can be identified by its paler color...

I think the cortex should be darker in color since the majority of the capillaries is in the cortex(or is it?), but I can't be sure...

u r right about renal medulla and ur reason is right too.its just that all medulla's are not lighter than their corresponding cortex .
