Bioinformatics - DNA sequencing

Take a look at the DNA alignment of two genes:

The Homo Sapien is the longest DNA sequence. If the Homo Sapien gene has 1770 bases surely the overall aligned length should also be 1770, so why is it 1899?

Also what exactly does the dots in the diagram represent?

I get it, I didn't count the gaps.

What do the dots in the diagram represent?

yes, gaps are that

the dots mark mutations (different nucleotides)
