Oxygen Only Metabolism

Postby finn379 » Fri Jan 27, 2012 9:38 pm

Hi all,
I am an architect with a few questions as Biology is not my related field and I would greatly appreciate what ever information people can give me.

Is there any organism that metabolises purely by means of oxygen? If not (which i think is the most obvious side of this) what is the closest I can possibly find to this? Is there by any chance a bacteria which metabolises using maybe water and oxygen or are born nutrients?

As you may have sensed, i am very open with what it is I am looking for. I basically am trying to find some sort of evidence that a 100% sustainable form of metabolism is possible. If any one has any information on this that may be helpful, any articles or websites I would GREATLY APPRECIATE IT!!

Perhaps you can elaborate. Oxygen (and water) alone would not provide elements necessary for life as far as is knownw. Further, oxygen is not necessarily a source of energy as much as a sink for electrons to produce energy - oxygen is fact is pretty toxic.

If you’ll check the definition of metabolism, which is the sets of “chemical reactions” that occur in cells of living organism to sustain life, you will know that having this process with only oxygen present is impossible. There is no chemical reaction without more than one chemical.
