The Bioethical dilema of Genetic modification

Hello all,

I thought I would start my membership here by asking a question. Is it naive of the human race to tamper with a code that took billions of years to be be tested, tried, and fine tuned ? One may make some case for hermetically sealed laboratories, but that is not where the line is drawn. Companies such as monsanto among others have been introducing large quantities of genetically modified food to the populace, some of which, takes over and mingles with other non gmo crops. Could there be long term effects?

We still do not know all the causes for cancer, and there isn't a cure. Combine this with the fact of how long genetic modification research has been going on, I would say it is arrogant at best? Your thoughts please.

The biggest threat here are environmental organizations.They fear like monkeys from fire . If they don't want progress then they the must go to the cave and live there forever . As we bulgarians say we must act brave and irresponsible .

You have a gigantic misconception. The “code” is NOT “fine tuned”. The “code” is what works well enough for bare minimal of survival (in your words: “tested, tried”).

Well I didn't mean fine tuned in the sense that its already tuned, my apologies. I meant that you could look at it as being consistently tuned with different organisms and the environment. So, for instance, we would not know every implication of eating a leaf off a tree that was millions of years old. But that's a mild example.

We already know that humans have the capability to utterly destroy this world with nukes. And I ask the question, could we do the same with genetic modification?
