Will any of these work for you?

http://software.geocomm.com/

Some of them are open source. I don't do these sorts of things, so I'm not vouching for any of them. These were almost too easy to find, so I suspect you may have seen them already. All I did was google "GIS software" and these two links were 4th and 5th on the list, I think.

Hello
Try with "Andes/IDRISI", i use that and i gives me good results always.
You can also use google earth if you want a fast tool, but the program's GPS tool is only on the pay version. Well, try with andes, i got the official version but i guess you can find it for free.
I used ArcView too but it is more complicated and kinda old.

Good luck.

PS: Google earth will help you a lot
