How do stem cells work?

I know they can turn into any types of cell in the body, but how do they do that? Are the genes of stem cells different from normal cells? When you inject a dose of stem cells into a damaged area, how can they know which cells they need to turn into? How can scientist manipulate stem cells to turn into the cells they want?

of course their genome is the same as is the same for ALL your cells (which makes your question a little foolish;), but the expression of all kinds of transcription factors leading to non/expression of other proteins and enzymes leads to differentiation.

I think, that doctors need to induce the differentiation after they inject the stem cells.
