biology test and teacher

I have a question concerning a test my g.daughter, freshman HS took - ask give 3 causes of cancer.
one of the answers she put was smoking - teacher marked this wrong - said that what was in cancer stick
was the answer - marked wrong. Am I wrong to suggest that this was unfair. Thanks for any answer.

It depends on how clearly this was taught. I suspect the class was given a list of causes that they were then being tested on. It's tricky expecting a specific answer from the material, then getting another answer that's sort of right but you thought the students should know you didn't mean.

Of course, I'm just guessing.

I am guessing that the students were taught what it is in a cig that is the cancer causing agent, if so then the teacher is justified as the act of smoking doesn't cause cancer but some compounds in the cig are known to be carcinogenic.
I know its harsh for it to be marked wrong but I've always learnt from my mistakes that way
