getting started in bioinformatics(a story)

Postby Jakubas » Fri Dec 31, 2010 8:57 pm

Ok, I apologize of tthe bat because I may have already posted this previously but my comp is screwy so I'm not sure. quick intro:

I graduated from the Universty of Texas in 98 with a B.S. in Zoology. I was working as a research assistant/associate for an Austin company called Ambion. I was riding my motorcycle when a lady ran a red light and hit me at 45mph. I was in a coma for 6 monhs then went to formal rehab for about 3-4 years. During my rehab, Ambion was bought and moved to California so I no longer had a job to return to. Because I had no mor insurancxe, the rehab facilitey said I was cured and let me go. I continued my rehap with some courses at UHCL.(Univ of Hou Clear Lake). I ended up with a like a 79gpa in Computational Statistics, Intro to Comp Prog, and JAVA 1. Beause my company was n Austin(a computer city) and I have experience in a RNA lab I wanted to get into bioinformatics. Any suggestions on what to do? I'm willing to go back to school. And I'm not too comfortable with my JAVA skills.

Maybe first look, what opportunities of jobs you have in Austin, or whether are you willing to move.

Then you should care, whether should you first take some courses/school or will you have it during work.

Cis or trans? That's what matters.
