An intro to BioinformaticsI've read wikipedia and many other articles, but I really want to know what Bioinformatics really entails. I'm a second year at UCSD and I'm interested in the major, but I need to know what I'm really going to do, and what type of job outlook I'll have (assuming I don't go to medical school).
I've tried other boards, but hopefully you guys and gals can help out.
I think I was on the same track as you are. I was a pre-med major in college until junior year when I found out about bioinformatics which really attracted me.
I think the field of bioinformatics is not very clearly defined and it can be quite general as already mentioned by JackBean. When people ask me what it is (and many still do), I simply say it is the use of computer science to solve a biological problem. That is basically what it is down to.
