Germinating a mere kernelModerator: BioTeam

Germinating a mere kernelI have planted some oak tree seeded today. I cracked shells of three of them and got their kernels out. And I planted these kernels the same way I planted the seeds. I will wait for one or two weeks to see if the kernels too will germinate just like the seeds...
But, I'm cannot patiently wait such a long time, can anyone tell me if the kernels can germinate like seeds? Or is the shell always required for germination?
IMHO is the shell just for protection e.g. before patogens. Probably, if you kept them on filter paper, they should germinate just as well, maybe a little faster (the water will soak immediately etc), but in the soil they can have problems with some fungi and stuff

Cis or trans? That's what matters.
