One question about spit

Postby hurly » Mon Jul 11, 2005 9:32 pm

Why exactly do we humans and certain animals spit...?
It does require energy to re-produce the spit, so is it a good thing to spit?

I think if you look at the grand-scale of energy production the loss of energy isn't all that much

Maybe there's stuff like bacteria or dust in the mucus.

From immunological view, it can be defined as a natural behavior to reject foreign substances that enter our body through digestive systems in order to anticipate the possibilities of pathogenic substances to invade within our body. Also, it is a way to reject something unfamiliar to our body that ours don't recognize them yet.

Yeah, it's instinct to start spitting when you get something like hairs in your mouth.

As do I. lol. :D Some men do this as a sign of masculinity as well. I notice it outside of funerals and such.

Camelids (camels, llamas, alpacas, etc) spit out of frustration, defense or around food.

Yeah, this isn't a generally attractive thing for the ladies Poison. lol. I don't spit, I think it's disgusting to do it unless i've got hair in my mouth or something else like dust, etc.
